So, the gang here at the Dojo have been taking shots at when the next Google Penguin update is going to be. They tend to roll every 6 months or so... which means we'due.

When do you think it will be? Let me know in the comments... oh and here's a little movie poster we came up with just for fun...

Penguin 3.0

Hi my name is Dave and I, am an algo-holic

I am an avid search geek that spends most of his time reading about and playing with search engines. My main passion has always been about the technical side of things from a strong perspective rooted in IR and related technologies.

Nah brother, this one is the holiday buster, so all them peeps who think i know i'll take a week or two weeks off in the "good weather" will get their holidays ruined! So i'm torn it's either Friday 6 or Friday the 13th June. Too many people would make too much of it forever if they went with the Friday 13th, although that would be kind of hilarious IMHO, so Friday 6th June for Penguin 3!!

Didn't they say there wouldn't be any more big updates and they wouldn't be announced anyway? I thought Penguin 2 was the last biggie and all others would be rolled into on-going algo changes? Or maybe I imagined that...

Mine? Just before SMX Advanced…they seem to like to drop 'em just before that gig.

@Andy: Correct, the last biggie was indeed Penguin 2.0 on May 22nd '2013, then 2.1 on Oct 4th. But the update you're thinking of in Panda, which is no longer announced, and updated on about a weekly basis.

I'd guess that this Penguin update will be more of a refresh, i.e., Penguin 2.2, rather than 3, but 3 on that poster looks a heck of a lot better than 2.2 ;)

Looking at the correlation data, as the twisty mustache guy likes to say:

      Penguin 1.1 (Fri, May 25 2012) to Penguin 1.2 (Fri, Oct 5 2012) = 133 days, or 4 months and 10 days Penguin 1.2 (Oct 5, 2012) to Penguin 2.0 (May 22, 2013) = 229 days, or 7 months and 17 days Penguin 2.0 (Wed, May 22 2013) to Penguin 2.1 (Fri, Oct 4 2013)= 135 days, or 4 months and 12 days

Because I like seemingly predictable patterns and routine, I'm going to pretend to think the next Penguin update will be 2 days later than the last spring one, since that's what happened to the last autumn update, so my prediction is May 24, 2014.

It will be a Friday because it will be a major update as thresholds for guest blogging will be turned down substancially. It will be the the long weekend and it will be almost like the first Penguin and Panda as far as the % of SERPs it affects! I expect to be very busy in the near future!
