Facebook Tries To Steal Google Places Thunder

Facebook Adopts the Google Buzz Strategy

It seems that the Facebook is copying the strategy Google employed with their Buzz product. To Google's credit at least they didn't use the same name for what is essentially the same service. Both "Places" services on these Internet Bohemoth's identify a Place. In Google's case it is information about a Place. In the case of Facebook it seems more about stalking people in a Place but it also sounds like it could be part of their monetization strategy if they charged for 'checkins' at businesses.

SEO Dojo Chat - local links edition

Hey gang, this week for the SEO Dojo chat session we're having a repeat guest and a first timer; Garrett French and Darren Shaw . As many of you know Garrett is one of the gurus behind the team over at Ontolo who's wow'd us before in the chat (most recently with his partner Ben Wills). Our first timer, Darren Shaw, was on SEO Dojo radio today and is a long time SEO that specializes in ecommerce and local SEO.

Local Link building with Darren and Garrett

The two kick-ass search geeks recently teamed up to build White Spark's local citation tool. They are going to be joining us to talk about the genesis of the tool, how to use it and of course talking a little local link building as well. It's always great when Dojo members work together and this one is sure to be special.

As always things ramp up around 11am EST and if you aren't already a SEO Dojo member; what the heck are ya waiting for? Join Today!

Dojo Chat - behavioural modeling

This week's chat session; mad scientist Tim Nash

Let's take a trip into the mind of searchers, um actually let's not they rather unpleasant and mainly into porn. Instead let us discuss behavioural modelling and how we can model users visiting our sites from search engines. Looking at how we can use existing Analytics data a couple of demographic tools and a bit of thought to produce reports on ages and genders as well as which search terms convert better for which profile.

That's what we'll be talking about in this week's chat session in the SEO Dojo. The last time we had Tim hosting he blew our collective minds away with the nitty gritty technical aspects of Video - this time, it should be even wilder!!

We hope to see you there!

(Dojo Members; last week's transcript from geo-local with Andrew Shotland is now up)

This week's SEO Dojo Chat; Raven SEO

Ok, this week's chat with the Raven SEO guys is going to be another fun one much like our past session with the guys from Ontolo (Garrett French and Ben Wills) or the WordStream gang (Ken Lyons and Tom Demers).

We shall be sitting down to pick their brains on not only the tool set, but about SEO in general. If it is anything like our past guests performances, we'll hit them with the good bad and the ugly. I have to admit it's nice of them to enter the fray and take questions from the members on all aspects of their offerings.

The list keeps growing

Haven't joined the SEO Dojo yet? Ever wondered who helps with these chats sessions? Well, besides myself (aka theGypsy) and the Dojo regulars, we've had some great co-hosts including;

SEO Dojo chat hosts

We've looked at;

  • the Business of SEO
  • SEO KPI/Benchmarks
  • Personalized Search data
  • Real time/Social search
  • SEO Site Audits
  • Link building/baiting/prospecting
  • SEO Tools (obviously)
  • Keyword Research
  • Behavioural targeting/data
  • Microformats and RDFa
  • Content Strategy
  • Universal Search
  • Video SEO
  • Press Release for SEO

And that doesn't even include our occasional 'Free for All Fridays' which are an open forum for folks to ask questions, start discussions of interest. We also keep them in an archive for the members so that they can go back a peruse at their leisure if they couldn't attend. We already have a good selection of peeps we're looking to have on in the future to keep the goodiness flowing!

If you aren't already a member, this is yet another GREAT reason to consider it. If you're ready to get involved, sign up today!

New Site Layout and Logo

Ok, to state the obvious, we've changed a few things recently. As with everything this is an ongoing evolution. We spent 10 months playing with elements before we launched and will continue to do so as time moves on.

The logo was changed because a lot of folks had been asking us for T-shirts and other goodies they could buy/wear and in particular, the SOSG mascot. I hope you like it as I am kinda fond of the little fella and would love to see him out and about more.

We've also started making some changes to the actual site layout and interface. Far too many people had been complaining about not knowing about or being able to find all the goodies that we have throughout the Dojo. This will also be a work in progress as I talk to the membership and watch me precious analytics. Feel free to get in touch with suggestions, the goal is to make the place home.

I also decided to extend the design over to the main blog as well. It's spring cleaning time I guess... Even changed my avatar around the interwebs... (was getting hot in that winter garb)

Until next time, play safe and keep yer stick on the ice.
